Okay, the Wetterdudes have been calling for a big snow. It began in the Downtown area today about 0500. I headed out to the gym while the first snow storm of the season was taking shape. The workout was nice. The shower was hot, and I was dressed in my tweeds, sitting at my desk, looking out into the morning before the weather turned terribly bad. I’m always amazed by the people who, during a snow storm, point out that there are slick spots on the road. These are the same folks who point out that it’s cold — in January, and really hot  outside during the Dog Days of August. Ya think?

I’m not sure that it truly turned terribly bad at all. No the streets aren’t well cleared — no mach 90 speeds for most folks, but it’s not like it’s impassible. So I worked the full day and left on time. I needed to take care of some stuff, and I really wanted to cook a hearty supper. Tonight the menu was shrimp and grits. It’s a fairly quick meal to cook, hearty, and I really wanted something to spice up a cold, snowy day. It succeeded.

My usual wake time is prior to the cancellation (almost never happens) or delay (rare but possible) decision. I’ll check before I leave for the gym. If we’re on schedule, I’ll be on the cardio mill while most people are still waking up. If we’re delayed, I’ll shower, dress and nap until time to head in to earn my keep.

Some friends and I decided that it had been a very hard day at work, and we needed nothing more than a trip to the watering hole — even in the middle of a winter storm. A dirty Tanqueray martini makes the worst days better. We ate, we drank, and we laughed. We put the day behind us and got ready for the weekend for which we’d worked so hard.

Afterward, I went with one of them to the other side of the county to drop off a forgotten coat. I was amazed that in the entire trip we saw one salt truck on the Waterson as we made our way home. It gave some traction and helped ice form on the wiper blades — always a blessing in snowy weather. We’re both safe and sound, so my sister won’t be living large on my insurance money.

As pedestrian as it may seem I had to make it to the Kroger last night. Sometimes you need the staples even if there is a snow storm. It’s only a few hundred feet from my apartment, so it’s not like I was taking a second stab and enriching my sisters coffers. The picture above was taken in the parking lot. Upon reaching the front of the store, a sign on the door informed me that they were out of salt — sounds like a UU kitchen I deal with.  Fortunately, I needed only the ubiquitous bread, milk, and eggs. Those enbagged, I was home, settled in, and ready to be Snowbound for a bit.

The tattoo work will not be happening today. “C’est la neige,” as Morticia would say.

I was sitting at my desk wondering how I was going to get everything accomplished before quitting time, when there came the announcement. We were being released due to the bad weather. People had been buzzing about leaving early due to the impending ice storm all morning, and I was reminded why I hadn’t chosen education as a career path. Nonetheless, I was happy with the three and a half hours I got to come home, take a nap, read more of Soul Mates: Bound in Blood, and play on the Internet. I don’t know if the weather will bring about the ice and gloom predicted — the rest of the storm as it were, but I won’t turn down a delay in the morning either.

Even if it only lasts a short period of time, finally, we got snow. To go with the accumulation of the white stuff, I got four extra hours this morning, so I was able to fix a real breakfast on a workday (grits and shrimp), read, drink a pot of coffee, take a nap, and still get to work twenty minutes before my due time. I didn’t have time to build a snow man of my own though, so I’m using the picture as my sublimation. Plus I couldn’t get hold of Mark this morning (http://dragonwolf77.wordpress.com/2008/01/20/me-mark-the-snowman/).
